Stars advance past Doane 5-1

Four OCU players score goals for Stars

OKLAHOMA CITY – Oklahoma City University rocked Doane (Neb.) 5-1 in the NAIA Championship Opening Round Saturday at Stars Field.
The Stars got goals from four players to move to 20-1 on the season and advance to the second round of the NAIA Championships in Orange Beach, Ala.
"I thought it was a great statement for the ladies to make going into the round of 16," OCU coach Brian Harvey said. "In our two previous opening-round games we squeaked by in penalty kicks. This time we didn't play as nervous, we played with a lot more confidence and it reflected in the score line."
OCU jumped on the scoreboard in the 27-minute mark when senior Rachael O'Brien took a shot from 20 yards out and scored her first goal of the season to give the Stars a 1-0 lead.
In the 30th minute, junior Meghan McMahon sent a pass into the box that found the head of Sheridan Horner. The senior forward headed the ball past Doane goalkeeper Kelsey Stark and into the net to put OCU on top 2-0.
Horner scored her 12th goal of the season in the 61st minute when she took a pass from McMahon and put the ball over the keeper's head to stretch the OCU lead to 3-0.
Doane answered in the 77th minute when Sara Cushing beat OCU goalkeeper Alissa Reed to cut the Stars' lead to 3-1.
McMahon took a pass from Horner in the 82nd minute and scored her 59th career goal to make the score 4-1 in favor of OCU. With the goal, McMahon moved past Melissa Sexton (58) to become the all-time leading goal scorer in OCU history.
The Stars capped the scoring in the 84th minute when freshman Allison Worsham took a pass from Horner and scored her 18th goal of the season to give OCU the 5-1 victory.
Junior goalkeepers Ashley Bechtold and Reed split time between the posts. Bechtold got the start and made a save. Reed played the second half.
Doane's goal in the 77th minute was the first goal allowed by the OCU defense since Oct. 18. The Stars had posted six straight shutouts.
OCU will advance to take on Texas-Brownsville at 6:30 p.m. Nov. 26 at Orange Beach Sportsplex in Orange Beach, Ala. The Stars faced Texas-Brownsville earlier this season Aug. 31 and defeated the Scorpions 4-0 at Stars Field.
