OCU takes two of three duals against Newman, Nebraska Kearney and Neosho County

The Stars downed Newman 28-16 and fell 25-13 to Nebraska Kearny before pounding Neosho County 43-6

Derek Peperas won all three of his matches on Wednesday.
OKLAHOMA CITY – Oklahoma City University men's wrestling picked up a 28-16 win against Newman (Kan.) and fell 25-13 to Nebraska Kearney before pounding Neosho County (Kan.) 43-6 in an exhibition dual Wednesday at Abe Lemons Arena.
The No. 5 Stars got three wins from freshman Michael Brown, junior Kidd Gomez and senior Derek Peperas to move to 6-5 overall.
“We've wrestled seven duals in the last five days, which is a lot for a team,” OCU coach Archie Randall said. “But sometimes you have to put them through the paces to find out exactly where they're at. We know that we have five solid kids on the team, we've got some freshmen that need some work and some seniors that are going to be okay.”
Peperas kicked off the dual against Newman by pinning Ryan Spencer in two minutes and five seconds. Pepperas is currently ranked fifth at 174 pounds.
Brown, ranked seventh at 285, scored a 5-2 decision against Jacob Cole to put the Stars on top 12-4 through four matches.
At 125, Gomez, ranked fourth, scored a 14-4 major decision over Jordan Krenek. Nik Turner, ranked first at 157, pinned Jake Hattabaugh in 3:22 to finish off Newman 28-16.
Peperas got OCU going in the right direction against Nebraska Kearney, ranked fourth in NCAA Division II, with an 11-2 major decision against Mark Fiala at 174. Fiala is ranked fourth at 174 in NCAA Division II.
Brown and Gomez picked up decisions at 285 and 125 respectively, but after nine matches OCU trailed Nebraska Kearney 25-10. At 165, senior Kevin Hardy, ranked first at 165 scored a 7-1 decision over second-ranked Joey Wilson, but the Stars fell 25-13.
“I thought we could have wrestled a little bit better against Kearny,” Randall said. “We won four matches out of the ten, but our freshmen gave up two falls and you can't do that in a dual. But they're young and hopefully come March they'll be ready, and I think they will be.”
OCU finished the night with an exhibition dual against Neosho County. The Starts got falls from Turner at 157 and Eric Waggoner at 141. OCU also scored three major decisions from Mitchell Eichenauer at 197, Hunter Muskrat at 149 and Andrew Pontikes at 184 en route to a 43-6 win.
The Stars will return to action against Ouachita Baptist (Ark.) at 7 p.m. on Jan. 18 in Arkadelphia, Ark.
