OCU rolls past Xavier 86-48

Stars get off to 10-0 start to season

Dietra Caldwell scored 16 points on 7-of-11 shooting from the floor Tuesday.
LAS VEGAS – No. 1-ranked Oklahoma City University dismantled Xavier (La.) 86-48 on Tuesday at the Centennial Hills Community Center in the Las Vegas Hoopla in a matchup of top 20-ranked teams.
Dietra Caldwell, a senior from Missouri City, Texas, tallied a team-high 16 points for OCU. The Stars, top-ranked in NAIA Division I women's basketball, upped their record to 10-0.
No. 16-ranked Xavier dropped to 7-5. Xavier entered the contest allowing 55.5 points per game, ranked 14th in the NAIA.
Nicollette Smith, a senior from Tulsa, Okla., turned in 14 points and seven rebounds for OCU. Taylor Booze produced 12 points, five rebounds, four assists and three steals, while Tiffany Goldwire chipped in 11 points, 11 rebounds, four assists and three steals.
OCU outscored Xavier 24-1 through the first 7:30 of the second half. SiMon Franklin's free throw at 17:28 left accounted for Xavier's only point during that stretch.
Caldwell's jumper called a 16-0 run to put OCU ahead 61-23 with 12:30 remaining in the game.
“Our kids played with a lot of passion,” OCU coach Rob Edmisson said. “Our second-half defense was probably the best I have seen. I was really proud of how the kids responded after halftime.”
The Stars took advantage of 29 Xavier turnovers to create 41 points. Xavier managed 34 percent shooting from the field in the game and 29.6 percent shooting in the first half. Jazmone Kelly became the only Xavier player in double figures in scoring with 10 points.
In the first half, Xavier went scoreless for 4:45. OCU scored the game's next eight points, six from the free-throw line. Smith had four free throws during that span to help the Stars build a 28-12 lead.
OCU takes on Oklahoma Christian at 3 p.m. Dec. 31 at the Eagles Nest in the Backyard Brawl.
