Missouri Valley knocks off Stars 45-0

OCU brings backup wrestlers to dual

MARSHALL, Mo. – Oklahoma City University suffered a 45-0 setback to Missouri Valley on Wednesday at the Redford Gym in a matchup of top 10-ranked wrestling teams in the NAIA.
The eighth-ranked Stars fell to 1-2 in duals, while ninth-ranked Missouri Valley opened its season. OCU sent its second-string wrestlers while its mainline wrestlers traveled for the Menlo Invitational at 11 a.m. Saturday in Menlo, Calif.
Missouri Valley benefited from two pins and four wins by major decision. Paul Hansen, ranked third among NAIA 125-pounders, pinned the Stars' Alvie Killingsworth in 2:43.
Missouri Valley's Shay Shive, third-ranked at 149, defeated Keith Harding in a technical fall. Fifth-ranked Gian Traverso of Missouri Valley edged Josh Stewart 7-4 in the 157-pound bout. Fourth-ranked Carl Lawrence beat OCU's Derek Locust 13-4.
“It was a good opportunity for our younger wrestlers to get a chance to step up and wrestle a top NAIA team,” OCU assistant coach Link Davis said. “We have a lot of depth at each weight, but we are young. The guys wrestled hard every match. We just need to work on some mistakes we made at crucial times in matches.”
