SILOAM SPRINGS, Ark. – The 24th-ranked Oklahoma City University men's soccer team fell to Lyon (Ark.) on Saturday by a score of 4-2 in the John Brown Classic at JBU Alumni Field.
The Stars (3-2) finished up a four-game road swing through Louisiana and Arkansas with their second consecutive loss in as many days.
Alex Gang, a senior from Seoul, South Korea, led the offensive attack in the contest, firing four shots in the match. Senior Chris Spendlove and sophomore Ryan Hunter both attempted three shots, as the Stars outshot their opponent 17-14 in the loss.
Gang started off the scoring in the match after Francis Malalou, a junior from Gabon, Africa, beat the Lyon goalkeeper to a loose ball. Malalou then passed to Gang for the tap-in score in the seventh minute of play.
Spendlove, from Liverpool, England, booted in OCU's second goal of the contest in the 42nd minute. Steven Short provided the assist off a corner kick to set up Spendlove and give the Stars the 2-1 halftime advantage.
Lyon knotted the game in the 60th minute after an attack by Martel Reid-Warden slipped past OCU goalie Andy Fitzgerald, a senior from Kansas City, Mo. Lyon's eventual game-winning goal came at the 72:23 mark with a header from Robert Hall that found the left side of the box. The final goal of the match also came off the foot of Reid-Warden. The score came with eight seconds remaining in the contest on an empty net for the Stars.
After a two-week break, OCU will resume play with a home game against Texas Wesleyan. The Sept. 25 match is slated for a 7 p.m. start at Stars Field.
