OKLAHOMA CITY – Oklahoma City University began its 2010 men's soccer campaign on Saturday evening with a 3-1 victory over Huston-Tillotson (Texas) at Stars Field.
The Stars led the duration of the game and was helped to the victory by the impressive goalkeeping by senior Andy Fitzpatrick from Kansas City, Mo. Fitzpatrick recorded five saves in the second period to solidify the win.
OCU denied Huston-Tillotson any shot opportunities in the first period, while attacking on offense for nine shots. The lone first-half goal came off the foot of OCU newcomer, Francis Malalou, a junior from Gabon, Africa, in the 26th minute. Alex Gang, a senior from Seoul, South Korea, provided the assist.
Gang notched his second assist of the night when Stuart Hilton, a senior from Liverpool, England, added a goal in the 58th minute of play to extend the Stars' lead to 2-0.
Steven Short, a junior from Durban, South Africa, scored the final goal of the match in the 81st minute, capping off the OCU scoring at three. Drew Hall, a freshman from Edmond, Okla., contributed his first collegiate assist.
OCU outshot Huston-Tillotson 14-9 in the match with John Dill's three attempts leading the charge. Nine Stars players recorded at least one shot.
The Stars begin a four-game road trip with an 11 a.m. match against LSU-Shreveport on Sept. 4 in Shreveport, La.
