SILOAM SPRINGS, Ark. – Seventh-ranked Oklahoma City University came from behind to defeat John Brown (Ark.) 69-63 on Thursday evening at the Murray Sells Gymnasium in women's basketball.
The Stars (17-3, 12-1 Sooner Athletic Conference) trailed for much of the night before taking the lead with a 10-0 run midway through the second half. John Brown dropped its eighth straight game to fall to 7-16, 3-12 in the SAC.
Donica Cosby, a junior from Coldwater, Miss., paced OCU with a game-high 21 points. Cosby also had three assists, three steals and made 4 of her 6 attempts from the field.
Holly Hardin, a senior from Chickasha, Okla., recorded a double-double with 15 points and 11 rebounds, while Starr Fairbanks, a junior from Cincinnati, added 12 points.
Chontaye Walter hit a 3-pointer with 12:13 left in the second half to give OCU the lead for good at 41-40. Cosby followed with the next five points to push the Stars' lead to 46-40 with 10:26 to play.
The Stars took their biggest lead of the night at 63-54 on a layup from Hardin with 1:50 left on the clock.
OCU shot just 38.9 percent from the field for the game and committed 19 turnovers. The Stars forced John Brown into 28 turnovers, scoring 25 points off those turnovers.
The Stars started the game shooting just 5-of-15 from the field as John Brown opened up a 25-14 lead with 6:41 to play in the first half. OCU answered with a 10-0 run to cut the lead to 25-24 with 1:28 left before halftime.
Cosby hit a pair of free throws to start the run, then knocked in a 3-pointer to cut the JBU lead to 25-19. Walter scored on a fast-break layup, and Lauren Gober hit a jumper to cap the run. John Brown led 30-25 at the break.
The Stars will host Rogers State on Saturday at 3 p.m. inside Abe Lemons Arena.
