OCU rolls past Lubbock Christian 84-62

Starr Fairbanks reached her career high in scoring and recorded 20 or more points for the fifth time this season.

LUBBOCK, Texas – Oklahoma City University clinched a share of the Sooner Athletic Conference regular-season women's basketball championship with an 84-62 victory over Lubbock Christian (Texas) on Saturday at the Rip Griffin Center.

The Stars, ranked sixth in NAIA Division I, finished the regular season 26-3, 21-1 in the SAC. OCU has won or shared the league title 11 times.

OCU and Oklahoma Baptist became co-champions of the conference. Based on tiebreakers, the Stars will be the second seed in the SAC Tournament on March 4-6 in Bethany, Okla.

Starr Fairbanks and Holly Hardin topped the Stars with 22 points each. Lauren Gober added 19 points. Fairbanks, a junior from Cincinnati, tied with Hardin for game-high honors with seven rebounds. Hardin, a senior from Chickasha, Okla., recorded five blocked shots.

OCU used 62.5 percent shooting from the field to build a 48-26 halftime advantage. The Stars sank 55.4 percent of their shots from the floor in the game.

Renee Wilson totaled 22 points to be 25th-ranked Lubbock Christian's only scorer in double digits. Lubbock Christian managed only 38.7 percent shooting from the field.

OCU piled up 41 rebounds to Lubbock Christian's 27. The Stars compiled edges in second-chance points (16-10) and points off turnovers (17-10).

Fairbanks' layup capped a 9-3 run as the Stars built an early 20-7 advantage with 13:39 remaining in the first half.

OCU reeled off a 13-0 spree for its largest lead of the game at 38-12. Donica Cosby pocketed a steal, then scored in transition to cap the run with 5:59 left in the first period.
The Stars will vie for their eighth SAC Tournament crown next week at Southern Nazarene.
