Stars rout USAO 86-48

Starr Fairbanks led OCU with 19 points and eight rebounds Thursday.

CHICKASHA, Okla. – Oklahoma City University had four players score in double-digits in an 86-48 thumping of USAO on Thursday at USAO Fieldhouse.

The Stars, ranked sixth in NAIA Division I women's basketball, shot 46.5 percent from the field to improve to 24-2, 17-1 in the Sooner Athletic Conference. USAO dropped to 5-21, 3-15 in the SAC.

OCU forced 26 turnovers, outscoring USAO 17-8 in points off turnovers. The Stars also held a 14-2 advantage in second-chance points.

“I felt like our team got back to playing the way we were earlier in the season,” OCU coach Rob Edmisson said. “Our guys played well in halfcourt defense. I felt better about our effort and focus tonight.”

Starr Fairbanks, a junior from Cincinnati, led OCU with 19 points and eight rebounds.  Fairbank was efficient from the field, making of 8 of 12 shots.

Donica Cosby, a junior from Coldwater, Miss., contributed 15 points, three assists and a blocked shot. Holly Hardin, a senior from Chickasha, Okla., scored 14 points and pulled down eight rebounds, while Brett Bates, a sophomore from Hobart, Okla., came off the bench to add 11 points in just 11 minutes.

Hardin got OCU rolling by scoring 10 points on 5-of-6 shooting in the first half. The Stars used a 20-5 run to build a double-digit lead at 30-14. Hardin capped the run with a layup with 8:38 to play in the first half.

OCU shot 53.1 percent in the first half and led 40-23 at the break.

The Stars scored the first eight points to open the second half and extend its lead to 48-23 at the 17:32 mark. OCU took its biggest lead of the game on a jumper from Kirstin Baker to make the score 86-42 with 1:21 left in the game.

The Stars will host cross-town rival Southern Nazarene on Saturday at 3 p.m. inside Abe Lemons Arena.
