OCU trounces Mid-America Christian 86-44

Laura Duncan scored 16 points, including five 3-pointers Monday.

OKLAHOMA CITY – Oklahoma City University vanquished Mid-America Christian 86-44 on Monday evening inside Abe Lemons Arena.

The Stars, ranked seventh in NAIA Division I women's basketball, won their 10th consecutive game to improve to 16-3, 11-1 in the Sooner Athletic Conference.

OCU shot 63 percent from the field in the second half and outscored Mid-America 49-19 during that stretch to put the game away.

Starr Fairbanks, a junior from Cincinnati, tallied 17 points and six rebounds to lead the Stars. Laura Duncan, a senior from Edmond, Okla., added 16 points on 5-of-8 shooting from 3-point range.

“It was kind of the tale of two halves tonight,” OCU coach Rob Edmisson said. “I thought Laura Duncan in the first half really kept us in the game shooting 3s. That was huge because that is about all we had going in the first half. I thought we came out in the second half with more energy.”

The Stars went on a 21-3 streak over six minutes in the second half to build a 74-39 lead with 6:20 to play in the game.

Lauren Gober hit a jumper to start the run with 12:10 remaining to give OCU a 55-36 lead. Chontaye Walter followed with a 3-pointer, and Lameka Oakes hit a jumper to give OCU a 60-38 lead. Fairbanks capped the run with six consecutive points.

K.J. Johnson scored the final basket of the game with three seconds left to give OCU its biggest lead at 42 points.

The Stars recorded assists on all 14 of their first-half field goals and pushed out to a 37-25 lead at halftime. OCU used a 17-4 run at the end of the half to build a double-digit lead. Walter capped the run with a 3-pointer at 1:13 remaining to put the Stars up 37-23. Duncan paced the OCU offense in the first half with five 3-pointers and 15 points.

Donica Cosby had 12 points, six rebounds and five assists in the game, while Gober scored 11 points.

The Stars will travel to Siloam Springs, Ark., on Thursday to take on John Brown (Ark.) at 6 p.m.
