Gomez, Meyer get wins in OCU's dual loss

Central Oklahoma prevails 34-9 over Stars

Mark Meyer improved to 14-4 on the season.

EDMOND, Okla. – Two of Oklahoma City University's ranked individuals won matches in the Stars' 34-9 loss to Central Oklahoma on Thursday at Hamilton Field House.

Kidd Gomez at 125 pounds and Mark Meyer at 157 won for the Stars, ranked 12th in NAIA wrestling. OCU went to 7-4 in duals, while Central Oklahoma, ranked 12th in NCAA Division II, moved to 2-1.

“UCO is always solid,” OCU coach Archie Randall said. “We can't seem to get the right combination. We have 25 kids to pick from. We look a little different each time. You have to wrestle tough competition to figure out your mistakes. We're building, though. It matters what you do at the end.”

Meyer, a junior from Midwest City, Okla., cut OCU's deficit to 13-9 in the dual with a pin in 4:34 over Cory Dauphin at 157. Dauphin took the down position to start the second period, then picked up five points with a reversal and had Meyer on his back for a near fall. Meyer picked himself up, turned the tables and worked for a fall.

Ranked fourth at 157 in the NAIA, Meyer followed Ben Morgan's pin at 149.

“Mark caught him,” Randall said. “He set him up. Mark got into a headlock, then Mark caught him in a headlock.”

Up 11-5 with 30 seconds left, Gomez tried for the major decision but fell short. Gomez appeared to get a takedown signal with nine seconds left, but it was waved off. Gomez finished with five takedowns in his 125-pound bout. Gomez, a sophomore from Noble, Okla., held the No. 2 spot among NAIA 125-pounders.

“Kidd wrestled well,” Randall said. “He started slowly, but finished strong. We think he'll do well.”

Derrick Adkins put Central Oklahoma up 16-9 with a 5-0 win over Tyson Campbell at 165. Kelly Henderson added to Central Oklahoma's advantage with a pin in 2:22 over Andrew Pontikes at 174. Cody Dauphin had the Central Oklahoma's other fall at 285.
