OCU vs. Evangel women's basketball preview

THE MATCHUP: Oklahoma City University faces Evangel (Mo.) in a matchup of top-25 teams in NAIA women's basketball.
Tickets are $7 for adults, $5 students and free to OCU students, faculty and staff with their ID.

ABOUT THE STARS: OCU outclassed Baptist Bible (Mo.) 138-26 on Saturday at Abe Lemons Arena. OCU (2-0) set single-game program records for margin of victory (112 points), field goals (64), assists (51), fewest points allowed in a half (seven) and field-goal percentage (71.9 percent).
Kayla MacKenzie, a 5-foot-6 freshman from Peoria, Ariz., scored a game-high 21 points. MacKenzie shot 9-of-13 from the floor and added four rebounds, five assists and five steals in her Stars debut.
Chasity Workman, a 5-9 senior from Carrollton, Texas, recorded 20 points, seven rebounds, six assists and four steals. Workman hit 10 of her 12 shots from the field. Cara Pugh, a 6-2 freshman from Oklahoma City, totaled 18 points, six rebounds and three assists.
The Stars were ranked third in the preseason NAIA Division I rankings. SAC coaches placed OCU as the heavy favorite to win the league title. OCU has won or shared the SAC regular-season crown 11 times. Five-time national champion OCU entered the season tied for the most wins in NAIA women's basketball since 2000-01.
OCU owns a 4-0 record against Evangel. The Stars prevailed 62-44 in the most previous meeting Nov. 1, 2008 in Bethany, Okla., in the Southern Nazarene Classic.

ABOUT THE LADY CRUSADERS: Evangel posted a 75-65 triumph over Oklahoma Baptist on Saturday in Shawnee, Okla., to improve to 2-0. Evangel, ranked 24th in the NAIA, snapped eighth-ranked Oklahoma Baptist's 49-game home-court win streak. OBU had not lost in the Noble Complex since a 70-65 loss to Northwestern Oklahoma State on Feb. 22, 2007.
Caitlin Russell, a 5-10 senior, had 22 points and six rebounds for Evangel. Russell sank 7-of-10 from 3-point range. For her efforts, Russell nabbed Heart of America Athletic Conference player of the week honors. Lacy Luttrull, a 5-11 junior, added 14 points, three rebounds and three steals Saturday.
Evangel has been favored to win the Heart of America Athletic Conference in the preseason.

ABOUT THE COACHES: Rob Edmisson has posted a stellar 152-26 record in his sixth season at OCU and a 454-145 record overall in his 21st season as a head coach. Edmisson, a two-time SAC coach of the year, has led the Stars to SAC regular-season championships three times and three SAC Tournament titles. Edmisson coached the only player drafted into the WNBA from OCU, Mariam Sy. He won 192 games at Hutchinson (Kan.) and 110 as a high-school coach in Kansas.
Leon Neal has guided Evangel to 351-181 record in his 17th season there. Neal has garnered conference coach of the year six times.
