Stars earn SAC Tournament crown with 3-2 win over John Brown

Two goals McMahon, two assists by Andersson lead the way

The OCU women's soccer team celebrates their SAC tournament championship on Saturday.

KLAHOMA CITY – The Oklahoma City University women's soccer team outlasted John Brown (Ark.) 3-2 in the Sooner Athletic Conference tournament championship match at Stars Field on Saturday.

The 15th-ranked Stars (19-2) can now boast both the regular-season and tournament crowns in the SAC and now head to the NAIA Championships Opening Round on Nov. 20. Oklahoma City remains undefeated against NAIA foes this season.

"It was a total team effort, and I really think everybody contributed tonight," OCU coach Brian Harvey said of the win. "John Brown came at us and scored two goals. We answered with Alex Miley, the captain, playing the captain's role and getting the winning goal for us."

Miley's unassisted game-winning goal for the Stars was netted in the 64th minute of play. The tie-breaking score came less than a minute after John Brown's Jodi Knack knocked in her second goal of the evening to knot the final match at two apiece. Miley, a senior from Edmond, Okla., legged in her fifth goal of the season on the play.

Meghan McMahon, a freshman from Oklahoma City, contributed two goals in the match for OCU. Her first came in the 14th minute after she beat the defenders down the center of the field to face the keeper one-on-one. McMahon booted in her second goal in the 47th minute, her 14th goal of the season.

Both assists on McMahon's goals came off the foot of Malin Andersson. Andersson, a senior from Huskvarna, Sweden, has a team-high 20 assists and 44 points. She sits tied for fourth in the NAIA for total assists on the year.

OCU held a 13-6 shot advantage in the match, and the Stars defense only allowed three shots on goal for the Golden Eagles.

"It's a great feeling, and I'm very pleased for the girls," Harvey said. "They've worked hard all year. They've done all they can do in conference and now it's time to move on to the national tournament."
