Stars roll to 94-45 win over John Brown

Chontaye Walter had 13 points and two assists on Saturday.

OKLAHOMA CITY – Oklahoma City University smothered John Brown (Ark.) 94-45 on Saturday afternoon inside Abe Lemons Arena.

The Stars, ranked seventh in NAIA Division I women's basketball, forced JBU into 23 turnovers in the game, scoring 29 points off those turnovers. OCU improved to 11-3, 6-1 in the Sooner Athletic Conference.

“Our kids are committed defensively, and you can tell that with our intensity,” OCU coach Rob Edmisson said. “We're coming out and making it hard for teams to run things. I think our kids are really buying into it and having fun with it.”

Starr Fairbanks, a junior from Cincinnati, scored a game-high 22 points to lead OCU. Fairbanks also had four rebounds, two steals, a block and an assist.

Chontaye Walter and Lauren Gober each finished with 13 points, while K.J. Johnson had 11 points and four rebounds.

The Stars opened the game with an 11-0 run sparked by an aggressive defense. Leading 13-4, OCU went on a 33-5 run to put the game away. Seven OCU players scored during that stretch as Fairbanks had nine points.

OCU pushed out to its biggest lead at 92-40 on a 3-pointer from Brett Bates with 2:47 to play in the game.

The Stars shot 54.8 percent from the field for the game, including a blistering 69.0 percent in the first half. OCU limited John Brown to just 26.2 percent shooting.

The Stars outscored JBU 40-18 in the paint and 15-11 in second-chance points.

OCU will travel to Oklahoma Christian at 6 p.m. on Thursday night in the Backyard Brawl.
