OCU vs. Mid-America Christian women's basketball preview

Donica Cosby averages 13.9 points, 3.7 assists and 1.67 steals per game.

THE MATCHUP:
Oklahoma City University takes on Mid-America Christian looking for its 10th win in a row.

Tickets are $7 for adults, $5 for students. Admission is free for all OCU athletic events to OCU faculty, staff and students with their ID.


ABOUT THE STARS: OCU forged a tie atop the conference standings and stopped Oklahoma Baptist's 14-game win streak in a 68-60 victory Saturday at Abe Lemons Arena. The Stars (15-3, 10-1 SAC) picked up their ninth win in a row and 10th consecutive win in SAC play.

Starr Fairbanks, a 6-foot-2 junior from Cincinnati, recorded her first double-double of the season with 21 points and 11 rebounds. Fairbanks averages 12.8 points and 4.2 rebounds. Fairbanks, who ranks third in NAIA Division I with a 60 percent field-goal percentage, earned her second SAC player of the week award in a row.

Lauren Gober, a 6-1 freshman from Newcastle, Okla., added 13 points and five rebounds, helping OCU to a 19-5 advantage in bench points. Gober totals 10.1 points, 3.4 rebounds, 1.4 assists and 1.61 steals a game. Donica Cosby, a 5-8 junior from Coldwater, Miss., put together 11 points, seven rebounds and four assists. Cosby posts 13.9 points, 3.9 assists and 1.77 steals a game.

As a team, OCU stands fifth in field-goal percentage (46.8), seventh in assists (17.7) and eighth in average margin of victory (18.6) among NAIA Division I.

The Stars moved to seventh in the latest NAIA Division I rankings. OCU was picked to finish second in the conference in the preseason. The Stars entered this season tied for the most wins of any women's basketball program in the nation over the past nine years.

OCU is 5-0 all-time against Mid-America Christian. The Stars crushed Mid-America 96-58 on Dec. 12 in Oklahoma City. Brett Bates and Laura Duncan each had 17 points to lead OCU.

ABOUT THE LADY EVANGELS: Mid-America Christian dropped an 83-79 decision against Southern Nazarene on Saturday in Oklahoma City. Mid-America (11-10, 4-9 SAC) shot 46.6 percent from floor, but converted only 5 of 14 attempts from 3-point range.

Karina Trindade scored a game-high 24 points and pulled down 12 rebounds for her fifth double-double of the season. Trindale, a 5-11 senior, averages 11.9 points and 8.2 rebounds. Brittany Johnson was the only other MACU player in double figures with 17 points. Johnson, a 5-11 junior, leads the team with 12.0 points per outing.

MACU was picked ninth in the SAC preseason poll.

 

ABOUT THE COACHES: Rob Edmisson has posted a stellar 133-25 record in his fifth season at OCU and a 435-144 record overall in his 20th season as a head coach. Edmisson has led the Stars to SAC regular-season championships twice and the SAC Tournament title three times. Edmisson coached the only player drafted into the WNBA from OCU, Mariam Sy. He won 192 games at Hutchinson (Kan.) and 110 as a high-school coach in Kansas.

Markus Crandall has led Mid-America Christian to a 28-31 record in his second season as head coach. Crandall, whose team went 17-21 last season, scored more than 1,000 points while playing for Mid-America from 1993-97.
