THE MATCHUP: Surging Oklahoma City University puts its seven-game win streak on the line against St. Gregory's.
ABOUT THE STARS: OCU won in a romp 72-53 over Northwestern Oklahoma State on Saturday in Alva, Okla. The Stars (13-3, 8-1 Sooner Athletic Conference) picked up their eighth SAC win in a row. OCU has won by an average score of 81-51 during its seven-game win streak.
Starr Fairbanks, a 6-foot-2 junior from Cincinnati, scored a game-high 17 points Saturday on 7-of-13 shooting from the floor. Fairbanks is averaging 12.4 points and 3.9 rebounds. Fairbanks, the SAC player of the week, ranks second in NAIA Division I with a 63.1 percent field-goal percentage.
Donica Cosby, a 5-8 junior from Coldwater, Miss., added 13 points, five assists and three steals. Cosby leads OCU in scoring (14.5 points a game), assists (4.1) and steals (1.87). Chontaye Walter, a 5-8 senior from Oklahoma City, chipped in 10 points, four assists and three steals. Walter records 9.3 points, 4.1 rebounds, 4.1 assists and 1.50 steals a game.
As a team, OCU ranks fourth in field-goal percentage (47.8), seventh in assists (18.1) and ninth in average margin of victory (18.8) among NAIA Division I.
The Stars is ninth in the latest NAIA Division I rankings. OCU was picked to finish second in the conference in the preseason. The Stars entered this season tied for the most wins of any women's basketball program in the nation over the past nine years.
OCU has a 27-1 advantage against St. Gregory's all-time. The Stars defeated St. Gregory's 69-48 on Dec. 5 at Abe Lemons Arena. Lauren Gober had 16 points, six rebounds, two blocks and two steals for OCU.
ABOUT THE LADY CAVALIERS: St. Gregory's edged John Brown (Ark.) 76-73 on Saturday in Siloam Springs, Ark. Leticia Silva provided the game-turning 3-pointer with 11 seconds left for St. Gregory's (7-10, 2-7 SAC).
Silva, a 5-10 freshman, poured in 27 points and six rebounds, hittting 10 of 14 shots from the floor. Silva averages 12.2 points and 5.4 rebounds. Carletta Hernandez, a 5-11 junior, scored 16 points. Hernandez records 14.2 points and 4.4 rebounds a game.
SAC coaches picked St. Gregory's to finish last in the conference.
ABOUT THE COACHES: Rob Edmisson has posted a stellar 131-25 record in his fifth season at OCU and a 433-144 record overall in his 20th season as a head coach. Edmisson has led the Stars to SAC regular-season championships twice and the SAC Tournament title three times. Edmisson coached the only player drafted into the WNBA from OCU, Mariam Sy. He won 192 games at Hutchinson (Kan.) and 110 as a high-school coach in Kansas.
St. Gregory's has posted a 8-38 record under Kelly Archer, including a 1-28 performance in Archer's first season at St. Gregory's. Archer led Hillsdale Baptist to five national titles in the National Christian Collegiate Athletic Association prior to his arrival at St. Gregory's.
