AUSTIN, Texas — Oklahoma City University's men's soccer team opened the season with a 1-1 tie at Huston-Tillotson (Texas) on Saturday afternoon.
Despite an early 1-0 lead, OCU, ranked No. 3 in the NAIA, struggled on offense all day.
The Stars got a goal from Alex Gang in the 19th minute on a penalty kick to take a 1-0 lead. Huston-Tillotson responded four minutes later with a strike from Abraham Bernal to tie the game in the 23rd minute.
That would be the last of the scoring as the two teams fought through a sloppy game with 18 combined fouls.
After a quick start, OCU was unable to capitalize on scoring opportunities. The Stars got 11 shots off in the first half to six for HTU. Overall, OCU had a 12-10 advantage in shots.
OCU had a goal called back in the second half on offsides. John Dill drilled a goal into the left side off a corner kick, but was called offsides.
Gang, a junior from Seoul, South Korea, led the Stars with five shots, while Peiman Pahlevan, a freshman from Vallentuna, Sweden, got off three shots.
Goalie Andy Fitzpatrick, a junior from Kansas City, Mo., recorded four saves for the Stars.
OCU will play its first home match of the season at 3 p.m. Monday against LSU-Shreveport at Stars Field.
