OCU at Wayland Baptist women's basketball preview

THE MATCHUP: Oklahoma City University aims to notch its 11th 20-win season in a row when the Stars face Wayland Baptist (Texas) in a Sooner Athletic Conference road contest.

 

ABOUT THE STARS: OCU suffered its first road loss of the season 85-76 to Lubbock Christian (Texas) on Thursday at the Rip Griffin Center in Lubbock, Texas. The Stars went to 19-3, 11-3 in the SAC. Laura Duncan led the Stars with 22 points.

Duncan, a 5-foot-8 junior from Edmond, Okla., averages 12 points, 4.4 rebounds, 2.8 assists and 1.55 steals per game. She shoots a team-high 80.3 percent from the free-throw line.

Chelsea Ledbetter added 20 points. Ledbetter, a 5-8 senior from Norman, Okla., grabbed 10 boards, matching a career high. Ledbetter is averaging 9.8 points, 4.9 rebounds, 4.9 assists and 1.64 steals a game.

Chontaye Walter, a 5-8 junior from Oklahoma City, added nine points, seven rebounds and seven assists to the effort. Walter is shooting 52.9 percent from 3-point range.

Holly Hardin posted 13 points and six rebounds. Hardin, a 6-foot junior from Chickasha, Okla., paces the Stars, averaging 13 points, 9.9 rebounds, 2.00 steals and 1.45 blocks per game.  

The Stars are currently ranked seventh in the NAIA Division I and were picked to finish second in the SAC.

OCU leads the series against Wayland Baptist 25-16. The Stars defeated Wayland Baptist 91-55 on Jan. 3 at Abe Lemons Arena.

 

ABOUT THE FLYING QUEENS: Wayland Baptist (15-7, 9-5 SAC) defeated Mid-America Christian 72-51 on Thursday at the Hutcherson Center for its fifth win in a row. Jessi Howard, a 6-foot sophomore, led the Flying Queens with 16 points, all scored in the second half. Shelby Conrad, a 5-7 sophomore, added 13 points to the effort

Rose Ouma, a 5-11 junior, leads Wayland with 13.7 points, 9.4 rebounds and 4.77 steals a game. Alex Williams, a 5-11 freshman, adds 11.5 points and 5.7 rebounds a game.

Conference coaches picked Wayland Baptist to finish eighth in the 12-team SAC.

 

ABOUT THE COACHES: Rob Edmisson, who picked up his 400th career win on Dec. 11, has a record of 106-19 in his fourth season guiding OCU. Edmisson, the 2008 SAC coach of the year, led the Stars to SAC regular-season championships two of the three seasons he's been at the OCU helm. Edmisson coached the only player drafted into the WNBA from OCU, Mariam Sy. He won 192 games at Hutchinson (Kan.) and 110 as a high school coach in Kansas.

Tory Bryant has directed Wayland Baptist to a 30-24 record in his second season with the Queens. Bryant led Lubbock Trinity Christian High School (Texas) to a 96-19 record and two state championships.
