OKLAHOMA CITY – Oklahoma City University's women's basketball team edged John Brown (Ark.) 61-51 on Thursday at Abe Lemons Arena.
OCU improved to 22-5, 14-5 in the Sooner Athletic Conference. The Stars are currently ranked 16th in NAIA Division I.
Holly Hardin, a junior from Chickasha, Okla., led the Stars offense and defense with a double-double of 12 points and 12 boards. Laura Duncan, a junior from Edmond, Okla., and Erika Ferrell, a junior from Arlington, Texas, both scored 12 points for the Stars.
John Brown built a 12-4 with 13:37 to play in the first half. The Stars took the lead with 5:31 to play with a layup from Brett Bates. Hardin sparked a 14-6 run by sinking a field goal with 7:10 left in the first half.
OCU had their largest lead of 16 with 4:58 to play in the game. John Brown came within five with 1:19 to play with a layup from Chelsea Garrison.
Chontaye Walter, a junior from Oklahoma City, and Chelsea Ledbetter, a senior from Norman, Okla., both sank two free throws down the stretch, increasing the OCU lead to eight with 30 seconds to play.
OCU cashed in 30 John Brown turnovers to score 32 points.
OCU will face Rogers State on Saturday at 6 p.m. in Claremore, Okla.
