OCU posts 11th 20-win season in a row, winning 68-43

Breezy Martin supplied 25 points and 10 rebounds Thursday.

OKLAHOMA CITY – Oklahoma City University notched its 11th consecutive 20-win season with a 68-43 victory over St. Gregory's on Thursday at Abe Lemons Arena.

The Stars, ranked 13th in NAIA Division I women's basketball, improved to 20-4, 12-4 in the Sooner Athletic Conference. Breezy Martin spearheaded OCU with a career-high 25 points.

Entering 2008-09, OCU captured 323 victories over the past 10 seasons. OCU trails only Connecticut among women's college basketball programs during that span.

OCU stands among a handful of programs which have averaged more than 30 wins a season the past 10 years.

OCU has the most women's college basketball wins in the nation from 1998-2007.

“Our kids played with focus,” OCU coach Rob Edmisson said. “There was an energy level. You don't want kids to play to the scoreboard.”

Martin, a junior from Oklahoma City, surpassed her previous career high of 19 points, which she had done twice last season. Martin hit 8 of 11 from the field and 9 of 12 from the free-throw line. Martin also grabbed 10 rebounds, nine of which came on the offensive end.
OCU had a 45-23 advantage off the boards, helping forge a 20-6 advantage in second-chance points.

Laura Duncan added 16 points, six rebounds and four assists, nailing 4 of 9 shots from 3-point range. Chelsea Ledbetter registered eight rebounds, eight assists and two steals for the Stars.

Martin came off the bench for the first time this season. She had made 52 consecutive starts for OCU.

“I'm proud of the way she responded,” Edmisson said. “She was fired up. Laura Duncan shot the ball really well. Eight assists is what we expect of Chelsea.”

OCU built a 35-point lead at 67-32 off Kay McConnell's basket with 6:18 left in the game. McConnell capped a 15-point OCU run as St. Gregory's went scoreless for 4:43.

The Stars face fourth-ranked Oklahoma Baptist at 6 p.m. Saturday in Shawnee, Okla.
