OCU vs. St. Gregory's women's basketball preview

THE MATCHUP: Oklahoma City University faces Sooner Athletic Conference foe St. Gregory's.

Tickets are $6 for adults and $4 for children. OCU students and faculty are admitted free into all Stars events with their ID.

 

ABOUT THE STARS: The Stars picked up their fourth loss of the season on Saturday, falling to Wayland Baptist (Texas) 82-75 at the Hutcherson Center. OCU went to 19-4, 11-4 in the SAC. Brett Bates, a 5-foot-6 freshman from Hobart, Okla., led the Stars offensively with 19 points.

Laura Duncan followed with 14 points. Duncan, a 5-8 junior from Edmond, Okla., averages 12.1 points, 4.3 rebounds, 2.6 assists and 1.57 steals per game. Chontaye Walter, a 5-8 junior from Oklahoma City, added 13 points and four rebounds to the effort. Walter is leading the NAIA in 3-point field-goal percentage, shooting 52.7 percent from behind the arc.

Chelsea Ledbetter, a 5-8 senior from Norman, Okla., is currently ranked 12th in assists with 4.8 per game. Ledbetter averages 9.5 points, 4.8 rebounds and 1.57 steals per game.

Atta Diabate, a 6-1 senior from Mali, West Africa, posted a double-double for the Stars with 12 points and 12 boards. Diabate had her second career double-double, having previously gone for 14 points and 10 rebounds against Rogers State on Jan. 24, 2008.

The Stars are currently ranked 13th in the NAIA Division I. OCU leads the NAIA in assists (21.2 per game) and rebounding margin (15.0 a game). OCU ranks second in rebounding (46.0 per game) and in defensive boards (29.2 a game). OCU ranks third in field-goal percentage, shooting 47.7 percent.

OCU has gone 24-1 against St. Gregory's over the years, defeating SGU 84-50 on Jan. 24 in Shawnee, Okla.

 

ABOUT THE LADY CAVALIERS: St. Gregory's is 1-21, 0-16 in the SAC, falling to Oklahoma Baptist 86-60 on Tuesday in Shawnee, Okla. Jalisa Howard, a 5-7 freshman, posted a team-high 12 points and seven rebounds.

Sunni Hill, a 5-10 sophomore, followed with 11 points and six boards, while Lacey Craig, a 5-9 junior, added 10 points.

On the season, Howard leads St. Gregory's with 8.7 points, 5.0 rebounds and 1.48 steals a game.

 

ABOUT THE COACHES: Rob Edmisson has a record to 106-20 in his fourth season guiding OCU. Edmisson, the 2008 SAC coach of the year, recorded his 400th career win on Dec. 11 against Mid-America Christian. Edmisson coached the only player drafted into the WNBA from OCU, Mariam Sy. He won 192 games at Hutchinson (Kan.) and 110 as a high school coach in Kansas.

Kelly Archer is in his first season as head coach for the SGU women's basketball program. Before coming St. Gregory's, Archer spent 13 seasons at Hillsdale Baptist, where he guided his team to five national championships.
