Stars rout St. Gregory's 69-48

Starr Fairbanks scored 13 points on Saturday against St. Gregory's.

OKLAHOMA CITY – Oklahoma City University rolled to a 69-48 victory over St. Gregory's on Saturday afternoon inside Abe Lemons Arena.

The Stars, ranked eighth in NAIA women's basketball, ended the game on a 16-4 run to clinch their first conference victory of the season. OCU improved to 5-2, 1-1 in the Sooner Athletic Conference.

Lauren Gober, a freshman from Newcastle, Okla., led the Stars with 16 points, six rebounds, two blocks and two steals. Starr Fairbanks, a junior from Cincinnati, added 13 points and two assists on 5-of-9 shooting.

The Stars won big despite committing 21 turnovers and making just 11 of 17 shots from the free throw line.

“Our team, although talented, is underachieving so far,” OCU coach Rob Edmisson said. “There is nothing more frustrating than to see talented kids underachieving.

“We have to find a way as a staff to get our kids to play up to their ability.”

The Stars took advantage of their size, outscoring SGU 28-16 in the paint.

The Stars opened the second half with a 14-2 run capped by a layup from Holly Hardin to take a commanding 50-31 advantage with 14:29 left in the game. Chontaye Walter, a senior from Oklahoma City, sparked the run with two 3-pointers.

After pushing out to an early 12-3 lead, St. Gregory's chipped away to cut the lead 17-13 at the 12:13 mark in the first half.

SGU trailed 32-29 with 2:29 left in the first half before OCU scored the final four points for a 36-29 lead at the break.

The Stars will travel to face Mid-America Christian on Saturday, Dec. 12, in Oklahoma City at 6 p.m.
