OCU in Southwestern Classic preview

THE MATCHUP: Oklahoma City University meets NCAA Division II foes Southwestern Oklahoma State and Central Oklahoma this weekend in the Southwestern Classic in Weatherford, Okla.

ABOUT THE STARS: OCU rallied for a 72-68 victory over William Jewell (Mo.) on Saturday inside Abe Lemons Arena.

The Stars trailed by 13 points in the second half before going on a 22-9 run to tie the game at 60-60. With the game tied at 64 a piece, OCU got a 3-pointer from Lauren Gober at the 2:37 mark and never looked back.

Donica Cosby, a junior from Coldwater, Miss., led OCU with 23 points and three steals. Chontaye Walter, a senior from Oklahoma City, added 17 points and a team-high six rebounds and five assists. Walter shot 3 of 3 from 3-point range.

Laura Duncan, a senior from Edmond, Okla., finished with 14 points, four rebounds and three assists.

The Stars have been ranked eighth in NAIA Division I in the preseason. OCU has been picked to finish second in the conference. The Stars are tied for the most wins of any women's basketball program in the nation over the past nine years.

OCU defeated Central Oklahoma 98-74 on Nov. 10 at Abe Lemons Arena. OCU improved to 16-2 all-time against Central Oklahoma.

The Stars beat Southwestern 88-66 at Abe Lemons Arena in 2002-03. OCU has an 8-7 all-time record against Southwestern.

 

ABOUT THE BULLDOGS: Southwestern is 0-1 on the season after a 100-90 loss to Oklahoma Panhandle State in its only action of 2009-10 season. Jenna Sprague led SWOSU with 17 points in the game. Holly Jennings had 15 points, Chelsey Dillon added 12 points.

SWOSU was picked to finish seventh in the eight-team North Division of the Lone Star Conference preseason poll.

 

ABOUT THE BRONCHOS: Central Oklahoma stands at 0-1 on the season. UCO lost 70-69 in its season opener at Pittsburg State (Kan.) on Sunday. Ashley Beckley led UCO with 21 points, while Christina Yarbrough added 14 points, three assists and three steals.

Central Oklahoma is expected to win the Lone Star Conference North Division and is ranked 12th in NCAA Division II.


ABOUT THE COACHES: Rob Edmisson has posted a stellar 121-22 record in four seasons at OCU and a 423-141 record overall in 19 years as a head coach. Edmisson has led the Stars to SAC regular-season championships twice and the SAC Tournament title three times. Edmisson coached the only player drafted into the WNBA from OCU, Mariam Sy. He won 192 games at Hutchinson (Kan.) and 110 as a high-school coach in Kansas.

Kelsi Bond enters her first year as head coach at Southwestern Oklahoma State. Bond was most recently an assistant coach at Fresno State, where she helped the team to consecutive 20-win seasons and two Western Athletic Conference championships.

Guy Hardaker has guided his alma mater to a 66-28 ledger in his fourth season at Central Oklahoma. Hardaker went 173-148 with the 2005 Class 6A boys basketball state title at Edmond Santa Fe (Okla.) prior to UCO.
