OCU women fall short against USAO

Alex Miley took three shots against USAO on Friday night.

OKLAHOMA CITY – Oklahoma City University fell 3-2 to USAO on a goal in the final minute from Samantha Dehart on Friday evening at Stars Field.

With the loss, the Stars (9-5-1, 6-2-1 Sooner Athletic Conference) fell to fourth place in the conference with just one week to play.

“We played hard for 94 minutes, and we fell asleep in the last minute,” OCU coach Brian Harvey said. “We were really looking to take them into overtime.”

The Stars jumped out to a 1-0 lead on a goal from Sarah Leonard in the ninth minute of the game. Malin Andersson picked up the assist with the dish to Leonard.

The goal was Leonard's team-leading 19th of the season. Leonard, a senior from West Yorkshire, England, sits in third place in school history with 49 career goals.

Despite taking only two shots in the first half, OCU had a 1-0 advantage entering the second half.

Dehart scored her first goal of the night in the 55th minute to tie the score 1-1. Brittany Jay added a goal in the 79th minute to give USAO a 2-1 lead.

The Stars tied the score at two when Sarah Burnett kicked in a goal with her left leg off a dish from Leonard in the 81st minute.

With the game looking like it was headed to overtime, Dehart got free with just 24 seconds left in the game for her second goal of the night and the game-winner.

Each team had 11 shots in the game, while OCU held a 7-6 advantage in shots on goal.

The Stars will travel to Southern Nazarene on Tuesday evening at 5 p.m. to conclude the regular season.
