Stars cruise by Rogers State 5-0 in SAC opener

The Stars had plenty of offense on Saturday against Rogers State.

OKLAHOMA CITY – John Dill and Jason Gidney each scored two goals to lead No. 14 Oklahoma City University past Rogers State 5-0 in its Sooner Athletic Conference men's soccer opener Saturday at Stars Field.

The Stars (8-1-1, 1-0 SAC) have won seven games in a row.

“I thought it was a very impressive display tonight,” OCU coach Brian Harvey. “It's always nice to win your home games and it's always nice to win your opening game of the conference.”

Dill got things started for OCU when he scored off a rebound from the post in the 15th minute. Dill's putback was his fifth goal of the season.

Gidney gave the Stars a 2-0 lead when he found the back of the net in the 44th minute. Gidney was set up with a nice cross-field pass from Ryan Hunter to Luke Garvey, who set up Gidney for the goal.

OCU outshot RSU 9-4 in the first half for a 2-0 lead at the break.

The Stars put the game away in the second half with another goal from Dill in the 46th minute for a 3-0 lead.

Alex Gang added his team-leading 11th goal of the season in the 59th minute on a penalty kick after RSU was called for a foul in the box.

Gidney finished the scoring with a header in the back of the net off a corner kick from Steven Short. Short leads the team with nine assists for the season.

Andy Fitzpatrick picked up his second straight shutout with five saves against RSU.

“We're much improved from the beginning of our season,” Harvey said about his team. “Now that we are coming into SAC play, I think we are jelling at the right time.”

The Stars will travel to Mid-America Christian Tuesday at 4 p.m.
