THE MATCHUP: Oklahoma City University takes on cross-town rival Central Oklahoma.
ABOUT THE STARS: The Stars opened the season with a 73-67 victory over East Central on homecoming. OCU is ranked 12th in NAIA Division I and expected to finish third in the Sooner Athletic Conference in the preseason.
Laura Duncan, a 5-foot-8 sophomore from Edmond, Okla., led the Stars with 19 points while grabbing four rebounds Saturday. Duncan nailed 3 of 5 shots from 3-point range. Zanita Johnson, a 5-7 senior from Tulsa, Okla., chipped in 14 points and six assists, while Romana Vynuchalova, a 6-4 senior from Bratislava, Slovakia, added 14 points, six rebounds and two blocked shots.
The Stars defeated Central Oklahoma 79-72 in Edmond, Okla., last season.
ABOUT THE BRONCHOS: Central Oklahoma was selected to finish second in the Lone Star Conference North Division in the preseason. Central Oklahoma was 15-13 and second in the division last season.
Lizzie Brenner, a 5-10 senior, averaged 15.5 points and 7.6 rebounds in 2006-07. She was second-team all-region. Cassidy Pillow, who was second-team all-Lone Star North, added 10.8 points and 4.9 rebounds per contest.
ABOUT THE COACHES: Rob Edmisson has a 362-130 record in his 18th season as a head coach. Edmisson took the Stars to the second round of the NAIA tournament and a 27-8 record last season. Edmisson coached the only player drafted into the WNBA at OCU, Mariam Sy. He won 192 games at Hutchinson (Kan.) and 110 as a high-school coach in Kansas.
Guy Hardaker is in his second season as Central's coach. He spent several years at nearby Edmond Santa Fe High School and won the Class 6A boys state championship there.
