PLAINVIEW, Texas ? Oklahoma City University hung on for a 67-61 victory over Wayland Baptist (Texas) on Saturday at the Hutcherson Center.
The Stars led by as much as 20 points, but Wayland Baptist cut the OCU advantage to four with 10 seconds remaining. Chelsea Ledbetter nailed two free throws to seal the win with seven seconds left.
Romana Vynuchalova, a 6-foot-4 junior from Bratislava, Slovakia, paced OCU with 16 points, hitting 7 of 11 shots from the floor. Zanita Johnson, a 5-7 junior from Tulsa, Okla., added 15 points and three assists.
OCU used a 9-0 run near the end of the first half to build a 20-point lead. Ledbetter hit a 3-pointer to make the lead 39-19 with a minute remaining in the first half.
Wayland Baptist sliced the OCU lead to nine points on Miranda Damiano?s free throws with 2:38 left in the game. Damiano hit a pair of free throws with 33 seconds left to make OCU?s lead six points, then hit another two with 10 seconds left to make it a four-point game.
The Stars, ranked second in NAIA Division I, went to 15-1, 4-1 in the Sooner Athletic Conference. Wayland Baptist fell to 10-7, 1-4.
OCU faces Southern Nazarene at 6 p.m. Thursday at Abe Lemons Arena.
