OKLAHOMA CITY ?
Megan Griffin stuffed three shootout kicks as Oklahoma City University won 2-1 in a shootout over Oklahoma Baptist in the Sooner Athletic Conference women?s tournament championship Friday at Stars Field.
Griffin, a senior from Norman, Okla., gave up only
Lauren Aldred?s penalty kick in the 26th minute for the Stars.
?It?s always nerve-wracking when you go out there for PKs,? Griffin said. ?I stopped the first one, I was just so excited. Goalkeepers are only expected to stop one of five. And then when the second one came, I got really positive, and I knew we were going to win it then. So the third one was just icing on the cake.?
Jennifer Crawford, Whitney Ward and
Erika Garbrecht each put kicks in the net in the shootout. Ward tied the game 1-1 with an unassisted goal in the 71st minute.
Jessica Caudle shot a corner kick to OBU goalkeeper
Maira Negri, but the goalie fumbled the ball, and Ward put the ball into the net.
?She?s amazing,? Griffin said of Ward. ?Whitney has a way of bringing us out when we?re at our lowest. I think Whitney putting that goal in ? an amazing goal it was ? really got us going again.
?I?m so proud of my team. We went out there and gave it our all definitely in the second half and in the overtime periods. Definitely it was a team effort.?
OCU, ranked 21st in NAIA, improved to 17-2-1. The Stars play next against John Brown (Ark.) at noon Tuesday in the NAIA Region VI tournament at Oklahoma Baptist.
