Shaun Caven seeks to produce the United States’ next generation of international canoe/kayak competitors as Oklahoma City University canoe/kayak coach.
Caven enters his third year as the Stars coach in 2012-13. Caven also serves as OKC National High Performance Center head coach.
In 2011-12, the Stars won the overall team points standings in the USA Canoe/Kayak Collegiate Sprint National Championships on the Oklahoma River on May 12-13. OCU had the top male and female award winners in Cedric Bond and Kaitlyn McElroy. Bond won the honor for the second year in a row.
Caven orchestrated OCU’s team runner-up finish in the 2011 USA Canoe/Kayak Collegiate Sprint National Championships in Gainesville, Ga. Bond swept the men’s 200-meter, 500 and 5,000 open single races and teamed with Jared MacArthur to take the 200 and 500 doubles races. OCU’s Jen Burke captured the women’s 500 and 5K and the 200 and 500 doubles events along with teammate Katy Hill.
Caven has been a player in international canoe/kayak. He served Team USA in the London Olympics as sprint team manager/coach alongside U.S. Olympic sprint team coach Stein Jorgensen.
In 2008, Caven led the British Olympic canoe/kayak team, highlighted by gold medalist kayaker Tim Brabants.
A Castle Douglass, Scotland, native, Caven also guided the Scottish national team from 1997-2001 and the British junior team from 2001-05. Caven directed Team USA in the 2009 World Championships.
