Ashley Hudson finally got the best of Randi Beltz.
Hudson of OCU knocked off Beltz of Missouri Valley 4-2, 3-1 on Saturday. Beltz entered the match ranked second in the nation at 59 kilograms (130 pounds), and Hudson was ranked fourth at the weight.
Hudson, a senior from Wildwood, Mo., earned the wrestler of the duals Saturday as well as this week’s Super Star of the Week. Hudson said that she had only one win over Beltz in seven tries entering Saturday’s match.
“It’s always a constant battle between her and me,” Hudson said. “I lost all but one, and the one I won was to go to Italy. I needed to start off this season with a win over her.”
Hudson will represent the United States during the World University Championships on Oct. 26-29 in Torino, Italy. Hudson’s other win against Beltz came during qualifying for the U.S. team.
After competing in the Spanish Grand Prix in July 2009, Hudson knows what to expect during her upcoming trip.
“You’re always uncomfortable,” Hudson said. “The refs don’t speak English. The competition level is different. They do different moves. It’s obviously all wrestling, but you have to adapt to what they do.”
Hudson has become a three-time all-American while wrestling at OCU. She hopes to compete for the national championship her senior year.
“I want to win nationals at 59,” Hudson said. “I want to train hard so I can go out with a bang.”
