John Wilcox came to Oklahoma City University to reach his potential.
After high school, Wilcox went to Missouri Baptist to wrestle. Before his junior year in college, Archie Randall called him to see if he would be interested in wrestling at OCU.
Wilcox, this week’s U.S. Army Super Star of the week, was content at Missouri Baptist, but he knew Coach Randall would help him perform at the level he knew he was capable of.
“At Missouri Baptist I was never able to finish at the end of the season,” said Wilcox. “Now that I am at OCU, the coaches have helped me to finish at the end of the season. I have a chance to win the national title this year.”
Wilcox opened his quest for the NAIA national championship by winning the 174-pound title and capturing the outstanding wrestler award at the Lindenwood Open on Oct. 27 in St. Charles, Mo.
With the title, he has qualified for nationals. Wilcox defeated the No. 1-ranked wrestler in his weight class at the tournament.
Wilcox expects great things out of himself the rest of the season.
“It was exciting to get a win right off the bat, but it’s not the first tournament that matters, it’s the last one,” said Wilcox.
