Lauren Gober has had an immediate impact in her first season with Oklahoma City University’s women’s basketball team.
Gober, a 6-foot-1 freshman from Newcastle, Okla., has a unique set of skills on the court that has helped her make the transition to college basketball easier. Gober is this week’s Super Star of the Week after averaging 15.3 points and 5.3 rebounds for OCU this past week.
“Being as tall as I am, coach (Rob Edmisson) wanted me to work on my posting skills so I could play inside and out, and be a threat from everywhere,” Gober said. “I have always played guard. I was the tallest on my team in high school and I never played post. I don’t know what it is, but I would rather be on the outside shooting.”
Gober is having one of the most successful freshman seasons at OCU in recent history. Gober ranks fourth on the team in scoring with 10.4 points per game and she has led OCU in scoring on four occasions this season. Gober also leads the team with 48 3-point makes. She credits the summer workouts for helping to prepare her for the season.
“Coach had us in the weight room lifting every day,” Gober said. “We had scrimmage time in the gym just getting to know the girls, and showing coach what I could do and things he could help me out with.”
OCU finished the regular season in a first-place tie with Oklahoma Baptist in the Sooner Athletic Conference. The Stars, ranked sixth in NAIA Division I, will open SAC Tournament play on Thursday against cross-town rival Southern Nazarene at 2:15 p.m. in Bethany, Okla.
