Jerome Phillips has matured more than just on the basketball court since arriving at Oklahoma City University.

Phillips, a senior from Chickasha, Okla., has put together a strong senior season. Phillips is this week’s Super Star of the Week after averaging 13.3 points and 5.7 rebounds a game as OCU picked up crucial wins over Mid-America Christian and Rogers State.

Phillips likes the environment at OCU.

“I have become that person that my mother has always wanted me to be,” Phillips said. “Even in high school I struggled with my grades and staying focused. Here at OCU, I am surrounded by great people. I have made it to the second semester, and I am playing again and it’s just great.”

A person in Phillips’ life that has always been there for him is his twin brother Jeremy. Phillips says his brother can be annoying at times, but there is much love between the two.

“He lets me know everything that I am doing wrong because he knows what I should be doing,” Phillips said about his twin. “On the other hand, I wouldn’t trade him for anyone. He is my best friend, and he is a great person.”

Phillips has been a key member for OCU this season as the squad looks to return to the NAIA national tournament after missing out last season. The Stars are currently 11-7, 9-6 in the Sooner Athletic Conference.

“At the beginning of the year coach asked what we really wanted out of the season since last year we didn’t do too well, and we had set some similar goals,” Phillips said. “This year when he asked, everyone said they wanted to get to the national tournament. Out of our conference, they usual take the top three or four teams, and right now we are in third place. We’re in a pretty good situation right now as long as we continue to win.”
