Oklahoma City University’s women’s basketball team has been on a roll of late, and one of the biggest reasons has been the play of Donica Cosby.

Cosby, a 5-8 junior guard from Coldwater, Miss., is this week’s Super Star of the Week after averaging 22.7 points, 2.3 assists and 2.67 steals. Cosby had back-to-back games with 32 and 29 points for the Stars in wins over No. 18 Wayland Baptist (Texas) and Rogers State.

“I very rarely know how many points I had in a game,” Cosby said. “After the game I don’t ask, and I really don’t get into it. I just play and take what the defense gives me. I don’t try to force any shots, and I just try to play with my team.”

Cosby is in her first season with OCU after stints with Arkansas and Arkansas Fort-Smith. As a freshman at Arkansas, she averaged 11.6 points and was named to the Southeastern Conference all-freshman team.

Cosby had the opportunity to play against WNBA stars such as Candace Parker and Sylvia Fowles during her freshman campaign, something she believes has helped her in the long run.

“It taught me a lot, being so young,” Cosby said about playing in the SEC. “I had to learn how to play against the taller people because I am shorter.”

Cosby identified former Tennessee and current WNBA player Tamika Catchings as the player she looked up to most growing up.

“She plays offense as hard as she plays defense,” Cosby said of Catchings. “She just plays hard all the time.”

The Stars have won five games in a row by an average of 35.6 points. One of the reasons for the winning streak has been the defensive effort.

“I think our biggest key is defense. We are playing so well as a team and our team chemistry,” Cosby said. “Since the new year, we’ve just all been on the same planet. We’re out to win a national championship and we’re trying to take it a step at a time, work hard at practice and just get better every day.”
