Last year, Steven Short helped eliminate Oklahoma City University in the semifinals of the national soccer tournament as a member of Bethel (Tenn.).

Short, a sophomore from Durban, South Africa, transferred to OCU this year and is now a key contributor for the Stars.

“Some people might think that it would be weird,” Short said about playing for the team he competed against last year. “I think the players here respect me because they know how I play, and they know that I won a national championship with Bethel.”

Short said that playing for the championship last season has helped him as he now plays for OCU.

“It was a great experience,” he said. “I learned a lot at nationals, and I am just hoping we can do it again here with Oklahoma City.”

Short is this week’s Super Star of the week after scoring two goals and dishing out five assists and helping No. 14 OCU to a 3-0 record last week. Short leads the team with seven assists on the season.

Despite his ability to dish out assists, Short said he finds it more enjoyable to score a goal than set someone up for a goal.

“It’s always good to set someone up, but there is no greater feeling than scoring a goal,” said Short.

The Stars have won six games in a row, including a 3-2 overtime victory over then-No. 25 Cumberlands (Ky.) this past weekend.

“We’re definitely getting better each and every week,” said Short. “I think as we go on it will be better as we play some better teams. I think we can do a lot and we definitely want to go to nationals and do well.”
