Breezy Martin has emerged for the Oklahoma City University women’s basketball team as a key scorer.

Last week, Martin averaged 18 points, 7.5 rebounds, 1.5 steals and shot 57.9 percent from the field. Coming off the bench in the game against St. Gregory’s, Martin, a 5-11 junior from Oklahoma City, scored a career-high 25 points for the Stars.

“We all had a lot of energy that game,” said Martin. “We all connected as a team. I definitely wasn’t expecting 25 points coming off the bench. It definitely was a team effort that game.”

In 2007-08, Martin was the team’s third leading scorer, averaging 9.3 points and 4.7 rebounds per game. Until recently this season, Martin had fallen behind in scoring. Martin now averages 10.2 points and 4.6 boards per game.

“I realized that I have to step up and be a leader for the team,” Martin said. “I was feeling the pressure to be one of those big scorers for the team, and I knew I had to take on that role.”

The Stars are currently ranked 16th in NAIA Division I.

“We have to keep playing and keep our heads up even after coming off those losses,” Martin said. “As a team we want to be conference champions. In order to do that we have to come together as a team and play for each other and the team as a whole.

“I want to be a leader on the team and lead OCU to a winning season. We want to be conference and national champions this season, and I want to do everything I can on the court and help as much as possible so we can achieve our goals.”
