Although Shelbey Veselka may be among the smallest players on the court, she has been a big player for Oklahoma City University as the Stars’ libero.
Veselka has been playing volleyball for 13 years. She has played the position on and off throughout her volleyball career and is now in her second year as OCU’s libero.
A sophomore from Boerne, Texas, Veselka aided the Stars’ 4-0 week with her 3.92 digs-a-set average. She is this week’s Super Star of the Week.
“Playing the libero position is a lot of fun,” said Veselka. “I like having a big role and the pressure that goes along with passing.”
She has been keeping up with her demanding position and has been averaging 3.75 digs a set this year. While she has big goals for her team, she has even bigger goals for herself.
“We want to go to nationals. That is the ultimate goal for the team,” Veselka said. “My personal goal is to play on the USA team this summer or the summers in the future.”
Veselka was originally recruited as a setter for the Stars but has stepped in to fill the libero position. With her consistent defense, she will help the Stars’ push towards their goal of going to the NAIA Championships.
