As the freshman setter for the Oklahoma City University, volleyball team Vicky Murphy has taken on more responsibility than most freshmen.  And she’s handled it.

Although Murphy might be considered green when it comes to most collegiate setters, she has been surrounded by volleyball her entire life.

“This is the most responsibility I have had as a player,” said Murphy. “My mom has been a high school volleyball coach for over 20 years so I grew up with it.”

Although Murphy is only a freshman, she has already made an impact in the Sooner Athletic Conference. Murphy is the only setter in the SAC to receive setter of the week three times this season. She is also leading the conference and is ranked 11th in NAIA with 10.26 assists per set.

As the Stars picked up their first away win against Southern Nazarene ever, Murphy clinched the match with a dump-off kill in the middle.

“I never really know when something is given to me like setter of the week, my mom always calls and surprises me with the update,” said Murphy. “The girls on the team are so fun to play with and are really supportive. I wouldn’t be able to have these accomplishments without them.”

She has three sisters who all play as well. She has been playing competitively since the seventh grade. Murphy comes from such a strong volleyball background that playing is second nature.

When Murphy suffered a knee injury last year when she tore her anterior cruciate ligament and was out for seven months she was determined to return to the sport.

“It was hard getting back into playing shape, but I was focused on playing again. I knew I wanted to keep playing volleyball,” said Murphy.

After being cleared to play in March, Murphy came to OCU to fill the shoes of setter and team leader. Even though the task sometimes seems overwhelming, Vicky is optimistic about her and her team’s abilities.

“It’s exciting being a freshman and a setter,” Murphy said. “The team has been really great helping me out on the court and giving me pointers.”

Murphy expects to grow along with the OCU volleyball program.

“I hope we can win a national championship while I am here so volleyball can have a banner like all the other sports,” Murphy said. “I really want to see the program continue to grow and improve.”
