Oklahoma City University’s Lauren Gober buried 12-of-23 3-point jumpers during the Oklahoma Baptist Holiday Classic en route to leading the Stars to victories over Northwood (Texas) and Central Christian (Kan.). During the tournament, the 6-foot-2 forward became OCU’s all-time leading 3–point shooter, surpassing Kesha Watson who hit 238 3-pointers from 2001-04. Gober has 246 career 3-point makes so far and is this week’s Super Star of the week.
“The record means a lot,” Gober said. “Kesha Watson was a great player, so it is a big honor for me. My teammates are really great. They always encourage me to keep shooting even if my shot isn’t falling, and I love that they have such confidence in me.”
Gober averaged 27.5 points and 11 rebounds during the OBU Holiday Classic. The Stars hit the century mark twice and won their two games by a total of 179 points.
“It was a really good tournament, not just for me but for the entire team,” Gober said. “In each game we had four or five players with double-digit points. I think it was important because we have a three or four week break after that where we don’t have any games. It was important to come away from that tournament feeling good about ourselves.”
The senior from Newcastle, Okla., is shooting 46 percent from the behind the 3-point line this season and has broken her previous career high of 24 points three times in seven games this season.
“With me being a senior this year I wanted to step up and be a leader,” Gober said. “More importantly I wanted to step into whatever role the team needed, whether it is encouraging people on and off the court or scoring a lot of points. I just want to be what the team needs me to be to be successful.”
Gober, a nursing major, is in the top-5 in NAIA Division I in several offensive categories and balances her basketball exploits with a demanding degree program.
“It was difficult at first,” Gober said. “You have to devote a lot of time to school and also to practice and games and you still need time for yourself so you don’t go crazy. I think I found a great balance where I can get things done and still be successful.”
According to Gober, she had other athletic aspirations before taking up basketball.
“When I was younger I wanted to be a cheerleader but my mom wouldn’t let me,” Gober said. ‘I think it was good because you don’t see a lot of 6-foot-2 cheerleaders.”
The Stars are currently 5-2 on the season and ranked No. 10 in NAIA Division I women’s basketball.
