Oklahoma City University goalkeeper Ashley Bechtold and the Stars’ defense tied the OCU record for most shutouts in a season with a 3-0 victory over John Brown (Ark.). With the win, the 16-1 Stars earned their third straight Sooner Athletic Conference regular-season title.
“I am very fortunate to have a really good defense in front of me,” Bechtold said. “They all listen and it makes my job very easy.”
Bechtold has made 41 saves on the season while only allowing four goals in 22 appearances. The junior from Oklahoma City was named SAC defensive player of the week in October and is this week’s Super Star of the week.
“I was really honored to receive that award,” Bechtold said. “I work really hard for my team and all the awards that I get are for them and not just me.”
Bechtold likes her team’s chances heading into post-season play.
“We have been playing really well as a team and we work really well together and I expect us to keep going strong,” Bechtold said. “I would say that our chemistry is very natural. We get along on and off the field and we are all friends so it makes that much easier to go out and play.”
After her soccer career, Bechtold plans to stay in the sports arena.
“I was majoring in sports business but I recently switched to business administration,” Bechtold said. “After I graduate I’d like to go in to working for a sports team or something like that on the business side of things.”
According to Bechtold, she likes to take care of her hands even though they’re covered up while she’s on the field.
“I actually really enjoy getting my nails done,” Bechtold said. “Not many people know that because I am a goalkeeper and I’m always wearing gloves.”
