Oklahoma City University’s Brittney Roberts posted a 6-0 record en route to helping the second-ranked Stars take the inaugural Oklahoma City duals and is this week’s Super Star of the Week.
“It was a really big win for us,” Roberts said. “We were ranked No. 2 and we have always been national champions and it is just something that we have to fulfill those expectations. We had to come together as a team and we had to get back to where we are supposed to be.”
Roberts downed Julia Salata, of King (Tenn.), to help the Stars to the title. Roberts and Salata have battled at 155 pounds for the past few seasons.
“It was a really a great win for me,” Roberts said. “Sometimes she beats me, sometimes I beat her, but it was really big for me to go out and just wrestle and perform and take her head on and do what I needed to do.”
Roberts, a senior from Santa Fe, Texas, has been a member of three consecutive WCWA national championship teams and will look to lead OCU to another.
“It is awesome, but there is so much pressure at the same,” Roberts said. “I know that I need to step up and I have had so many great role models before me who have showed me how to do it, and I just need to step up and lead the team and get them to wrestle for themselves and for the team.”
Roberts, a three-time WCWA all-American, had to be talked in to becoming a wrestler.
“It is a funny story actually,” Roberts said. “I played every sport I could while growing up. My friend’s brother was a wrestler and she decided to give wrestling a shot and got me to try it with her. She ended up quitting a couple weeks later and I just kept going.”
Roberts, a biomedical science major, plans to continue her education and wrestling career after graduating from OCU.
“My career plans are to graduate in May and then go on to attend nursing school or physician’s-assistant school,” Roberts said. “I want to continue to wrestle and try to wrestle in the 2016 Olympics.”
