Oklahoma City University sophomore Meghan Irwin likes to see every play she makes before she even steps on the volleyball court.
“I really try to visualize what I want to in every game” Irwin said. “I try to see myself going up and swinging at the ball and getting the ball from my setter. I try to do that before each match, and I get a few rotations off the court so I try to do it then too.”
Irwin, of Arlington, Texas, became the Sooner Athletic Conference volleyball hitter of the week after helping the Stars to wins over Haskell (Kan.), Bethel (Kan.) and Harris-Stowe State (Mo.) and is this week’s Super Star of the week.
The sophomore outside hitter averaged 4.0 kills and 0.67 blocks a set while posting a .342 attack percentage in OCU's 3-3 week.
She totaled 84 kills, 15 digs and 14 blocks in six games for OCU. Irwin posted 18 kills against Sioux Falls (S.D.) on Friday in the Avila Classic at Kansas City, Mo.
According to Irwin, she picked OCU over several other schools because she had a gut feeling.
“I went to visit quite a few schools, and I practiced with the teams,” Irwin said. "I did the routine as far as recruiting goes for OCU and there was this gut feeling. I was talking to my dad and I said, ‘I really want to go to OCU.’ I really like Nikki [Dieball], I love the girls and I just had a gut feeling.”
Irwin says one bonus about going to OCU is being close to her sister, Caitlin Irwin, who attends OCU school of law.
“It’s wonderful,” Irwin said. “Last year I would have had probably three to four more times the meltdowns as a freshman in college if she wasn’t here, so that was nice. I definitely talk to her about my grades, but I can’t stand talking to her about volleyball.”
OCU coach Nikki Dieball admires Irwin’s ability to be vocal on the court. According to Irwin, it is a skill she learned in high school to avoid punishment.
“My coach would count to three and if no one said anything or made a weird noise we would have to run,” Irwin said. “I really hate running. He would like us to say something that related to the game, but I would just yell because I didn’t want to run.”
