Oklahoma City University’s Magean De La Torre was a second-team all-Sooner Athletic Conference outfielder a season ago and posted a .973 fielding percentage in 62 games. This season De La Torre made the jump from the outfield to the hot corner.
“It has been a little bit tough,” De La Torre said. “I haven’t played third base since I was 10 years old. Going from the grass to the dirt is always a bit shaky.”
The junior from Plano, Texas, says she getting the hang of playing her new position.
“Third base can be a bit scary,” De La Torre said. “I actually got hit in the head in one of our games down in Texas, so I’m just trying to make sure my glove gets to my face quick enough.”
The defensive move has not affected De La Torre at the plate. De La Torre is hitting .333 with 20 RBIs and five home runs this season and slugged a pair homers in the Stars’ sweep of Oklahoma Wesleyan to become this week’s Super Star of the week.
“I just saw that my teammates were on base and I had to pick them up,” De La Torre said. “If they get on base, it’s is my job to help them out. They work hard, I work hard.”
De La Torre has helped the Stars, No. 3 in NAIA softball, to 21 straight victories this season.
“We really just try not to think about it, because if you think too much you get into your head,” De La Torre said. “Softball is so mental that you just have to play your game and worry about you and your teammates and everything will just work itself out.”
De La Torre is confident that the Stars will continue to have the same kind of success the rest of the season.
“We’re usually more of a defensive team, but we have really been hitting the ball well,” De La Torre said. “Lily LaVelle is just a machine on the mound and if we can get as many runs as we can to help her out then it’s pretty much cohesive like that.”
