When Blerta Rashica scores for Oklahoma City University, look for more than just one from her.
Rashica scored four goals for the Stars women’s soccer team on Oct. 22 against Wayland Baptist (Texas) en route to being named the Sooner Athletic Conference offensive player of the week. She has netted 11 goals, passed out three assists and has accumulated 25 points this season and is this week’s Super Star of the week.
“We played really well against Wayland Baptist,” Rashica said.” But something happened in those last 20 minutes, we kind of got slow, but we picked it up, and we had a good performance in the end.”
The forward out of Orebro, Sweden, has two multi-goal matches this season. The first came in the first match of the season against Mount Vernon Nazarene (Ohio) where she scored three goals.
According to Rashica, she doesn’t know why she tends to score goals in bunches.
“I don’t really know,” Rashica said. “When you score it just gives you really good confidence and you keep doing it. It just makes you feel good and relaxed.”
Rashica doesn’t put much stock in personal awards like being SAC offensive player of the week.
“I didn’t even know about it until about 13 minutes before this interview,” Rashica said. “But I guess it is good.”
The sophomore from Sweden decided to play at OCU because she wanted to do something different.
“I needed a change,” Rashica said. “I liked the environment I was in, but I was on a team that I had played with for almost five or six years, and after high school I just decided I needed to move and do something else.”
Rashica has an interesting connection with the U.S. women’s national soccer team from her time in Sweden.
“I used to play for Pia Sundhage, who is the U.S. women’s national team coach,” Rashica said. “She was one of my old coaches, which is kind of cool, and it is something to brag about.”
