OCU seeks fourth WCWA title in a row

WCWA Championships begin 8 a.m. CST Saturday in Bristol, Tenn.

The Stars' Brittany Delgado is a two-time WCWA national champion and three-time all-American.
BRISTOL, Tenn. – Oklahoma City University boasts the top ranking plus six No. 1-ranked individuals to aid in its quest for its fourth consecutive Women's College Wrestling Association championship.
The WCWA Championships will be contested 8 a.m. Oklahoma time Saturday at King College's Student Center Complex. The championship finals are set for 6 p.m.
Fans can keep with the tournament via live scoring at TrackWrestling.com or watch on live video. Coaches and wrestlers from the top five teams, including the Stars, will take part in a press conference 2 p.m. Central time Friday that will be available to watch.
OCU captured its fifth consecutive NWCA National Duals title with a 25-14 win over second-ranked King (Tenn.) on Jan. 8 in Springfield, Ill. The Stars' Jennifer Page, a freshman from Orangevale, Calif., took outstanding wrestler of the tournament.
The Stars completed the dual season 22-0. OCU has now won 57 duals in a row and gone 72-0-1 in its last 73 duals. The Stars last lost Nov. 29, 2008 and were tied Oct. 23, 2009.
OCU coach Archie Randall anticipates 10 of OCU's 18 competitors to place Saturday. The top six at each weight in the tournament score points and become all-Americans. The tournament will not award points for winning consolation matches.
“The tournament is going to be close,” Randall said. “Stumble any place, and it could cost you. Everybody has two or three kids who can place. No one cares about anybody else. They have to get theirs.”
OCU's six top-ranked individuals are Emily Webster at 101 pounds, Joey Miller (116), Michaela Hutchison (123), Audrey Morehouse (130), Kristie Davis (155) and Brittany Delgado (191).
Delgado, a senior from Fountain Inn, S.C., will vie for her third consecutive national championship, while Davis, a senior from Mustang, Okla., will aim to repeat. Hutchison, a senior from Soldotna, Alaska, finished runner-up last year at 121 pounds after winning back-to-back national titles.
Delgado and Hutchison will attempt to become four-time all-Americans. Ashley Hudson, who won the outstanding wrestler award, and Nicole Woody became OCU's first four-time all-Americans last year.
In the 2011 WCWA Championships, OCU outscored Simon Fraser 117-96 on Jan. 29 in Atherton, Calif. Thirteen Stars became all-Americans as OCU won nine of its 10 bouts in the championship and consolation finals.
“We have to finish where we're seeded at,” Randall said.
King and third-ranked Simon Fraser will present the toughest challenges for OCU.
“If we place 1-2 at a weight, and they place 1-2 at a weight, we're even,” Randall said. “If we have six champions, and they have five champions, it's a matter of who places the highest. King could place 10 as well. Hopefully we place more.”
Randall expects a tournament of 170 individuals.
“It's still growing,” Randall said about women's wrestling. “Recruiting has become tough.”
