GUELPH, Ontario – Brittany Delgado of Oklahoma City University took third place at 72 kilograms, while Kristie Davis finished sixth at 67 kilos for the United States in the Canada Cup on Sunday.
Delgado, a junior-to-be at OCU from Fountain Inn, S.C., picked up two pins to rebound from a first-round loss while competing for the U.S. FILA Junior Women's World Team.
Delgado pinned Laura Conway and Analiese DeAragon of the United States. Canada's Ohenewa Akuffo defeated Delgado. Delgado will compete next in the FILA Junior World Championships on July 22-23 in Budapest, Hungary.
“Brittany Delgado came to OCU as a 240-pound freshman,” OCU coach Archie Randall said. “Her goal was to get down to 150 pounds and give herself a chance to compete internationally. It's been a two-year process to get to her goal, and it's paid off to her. She has a really good chance to be the junior world champion. It's one of the first steps to becoming a part of the World Team.”
Wrestling for the U.S. Senior Women's World Team, Davis pinned Canada's Marissa Sorrell, but suffered losses to Elena Pirozkhova of the United States, Vanessa Wilson of Canada and Jeramie Herrington of Canada.
Davis, the most decorated U.S. women's wrestler ever, also had to bow out of her bout against Jeramie Herrington by injury default. Davis will be wrestling in the World Wrestling Championships in September in Moscow.
“She aggravated an injury, but there will have time for her to be ready,” Randall said.
