OCU recruit Yamaguchi wins Junior National title

BUDAPEST, Hungary – Brittany Delgado of Oklahoma City University took fifth place in the Junior World Championships at 72 kilograms (158.5 pounds) on Sunday.

Delgado, a junior-to-be from Fountain Inn, S.C., went 2-2 on the way to the finish.

Delgado fell 5-3, 3-0 to Xinyi Liu of China in the bronze-medal match. She defeated Naranchimeg Batsaikhan of Mongolia 2-0, 3-0 and Epp Mae of Estonia 2-3, 2-1, 1-0 before losing 4-3, 4-3 to Natalia Vorobieva of Russia in the semifinals.

This season, Delgado captured the Women’s College Wrestling Association 95-kilogram national championship. She went 34-2 for the national champion Stars.

 

OCU recruits perform well

 

OCU signee Megan Yamaguchi captured the 109-pound national championship in the Junior National Championships in Fargo, N.D., on Saturday.

Yamaguchi, from Wahiawa, Hawaii, went 6-0 and knocked off Natalie Rutt of Belle Plaine, Minn., 6-2, 1-0 for the title. Yamaguchi won the state championship while competing for Wahiawa Kalani High School (Hawaii) as a senior. She had finished seventh in last year’s Junior Nationals.

OCU recruit Brianna Rahall of Yorktown, Va., finished in fifth place at 98 pounds. She went 3-2 in the tournament.

OCU signee Heath Boyd of Edmond, Okla., went 3-2 in both the freestyle and Greco-Roman competitions at 160 pounds in the Junior National Championships. He also picked up a fall in 3:42 over Ada’s Justin Todd in the Oklahoma Coaches Association all-state matches.

Also at the all-state matches, OCU recruit James Brigance of Talihina, Okla., defeated Jakeb Willoughby of Clinton 2-1.

 

OCU recruits named all-American

 

Brittany Goebel of Lena, Ill., became a first-team ASICS all-American as named by TheMat.com, one of three incoming freshmen from OCU who were on the list.

Rahall and Kristi Garr of Goodale, Mich., were the other Stars garnering all-American honors. Rahall made the third team, while Garr gained honorable-mention acclaim. For the complete list, click here.
