THE MATCHUP: Oklahoma City University and Southern Nazarene collide in another installment of the most heated rivalry in NAIA women's basketball.
OCU and Southern Nazarene have combined for 24 Sooner Athletic Conference championships, 15 of 16 SAC Tournament titles and 12 NAIA Division I championships. The two played for the national championship each year from 2002-04, with the Stars capturing the NAIA title in 2002.
ABOUT THE STARS: OCU persevered for a 68-62 victory over Rogers State on Saturday at Abe Lemons Arena. The Stars (18-3, 13-1 SAC) used advantages in points off turnovers (27-10) and points in transition (12-0) to post their 12th win in a row and 13th consecutive win in SAC play.
Chontaye Walter, a 5-foot-8 senior from Oklahoma City, scored a game-high 19 points while also having five rebounds, three assists and two steals. Walter records 9.5 points, 4.1 rebounds, 4.2 assists and 1.52 steals a game.
Donica Cosby, a 5-8 junior from Coldwater, Miss., added 18 points and four assists. Cosby averages 14.3 points, 3.9 assists and 1.75 steals a game. Starr Fairbanks, a 6-2 junior from Cincinnati, contributed 12 points, five rebounds and two steals. Fairbanks scores 12.9 points and grabs 4.2 rebounds a game. Fairbanks ranks second in NAIA Division I with a 59.3 percent field-goal percentage.
As a team, OCU stands sixth in field-goal percentage (46.3), eighth in assists (17.6) and ninth in average margin of victory (18.5) among NAIA Division I.
The Stars is seventh in the latest NAIA Division I rankings. OCU was picked to finish second in the conference in the preseason. The Stars entered this season tied for the most wins of any women's basketball program in the nation over the past nine years.
Southern Nazarene leads the overall series 35-27. OCU won the last meeting 66-62 on Jan. 31, 2009 in Bethany, Okla. Walter had 14 points, while Holly Hardin pulled down 10 rebounds for the Stars.
ABOUT THE CRIMSON STORM: Southern Nazarene fended off Oklahoma Christian 70-53 on Saturday in Bethany, Okla. Southern Nazarene (15-8, 9-6 SAC) rolled after Oklahoma Christian cut the Storm's lead to two points with 13:13 left in the game.
Lana Keith, a 5-10 senior, and Abbey Marra, a 6-1 sophomore, each had 18 points and nine rebounds Saturday. Keith leads the SAC with 18.2 points a game. Logan Martin, a 5-9 sophomore, averages 11.8 points, 4.9 rebounds, 5.6 assists and 1.65 steals, leading the SAC in assists. Southern Nazarene ranks fourth nationally with a ratio of 1.15 assists per turnover.
SAC coaches picked Southern Nazarene to finish third in the conference during the preseason.
ABOUT THE COACHES: Rob Edmisson has posted a stellar 136-25 record in his fifth season at OCU and a 438-144 record overall in his 20th season as a head coach. Edmisson has led the Stars to SAC regular-season championships twice and the SAC Tournament title three times. Edmisson coached the only player drafted into the WNBA from OCU, Mariam Sy. He won 192 games at Hutchinson (Kan.) and 110 as a high-school coach in Kansas.
Lori Carter has a 166-60 record in her seventh season guiding Southern Nazarene. Including three seasons at St. Gregory's, Carter has a 205-114 record as a head coach. Carter, the SAC coach of the year in 2001, 2007 and 2009, played for SNU from 1989-92 and served as an assistant at OCU from 1996-98 before leading the Storm to the 2004 NAIA championship.
