ATHERTON, Calif. – Oklahoma City University had five individual champions as the Stars captured the Menlo Lady Oaks Open Tournament on Sunday at Haynes-Prim Pavilion.
Stephanie Waters at 44 kilograms, Nicole Woody at 48, Ashley Hudson at 59, Melissa Simmons at 72 and Brittany Delgado at 82 each won titles Sunday.
Woody, a junior from Gambrills, Md., avenged a dual loss to Victoria Anthony of Simon Fraser (British Columbia) by knocking off Anthony 2-1, 3-1. Woody is ranked No. 1 at 48, while Anthony is rated third.
Waters, a junior from Joliet, Ill., pinned Tamika Jones of Yakima Valley (Wash.) in the second period of their match.
Hudson, a junior from Wildwood, Mo., beat Raissa Dickinson of Simon Fraser in a technical fall. Hudson is atop the 59-kilogram rankings, while Dickinson is ranked eighth.
Simmons, a sophomore from Ridgefield, Wash., rolled to the tournament crown on the strength of four falls. Simmons, top-ranked at 72, beat eighth-ranked Rebecca Madeiros of Menlo (Calif.) in a second-period pin.
Delgado, a sophomore from Simpsonville, S.C., defeated Simon Fraser’s Hillary Greening, ranked No. 1 at 82, for the second time this weekend. Delgado also pinned San Jose State’s Natasha Phinney in 29 seconds.
In addition, four Stars reached the finals within their bracket as 13 OCU competitors placed in the tournament.
