Three more Stars qualify for NAIA Championships in Cumberland Open

LEBANON, Tenn. – Jeremy Garner, Corey Johnson and Andrew Pontikes of Oklahoma City University qualified for the NAIA wrestling championships with their performance Saturday in the Cumberland Open at the Dallas Floyd Recreation Center.

Those three as well as Bryce Dicus, Mark Meyer, Cameron Ream and Nik Turner of the Stars placed in the Cumberland Open.

Garner, Johnson, Meyer, Pontikes, Ream and Turner comprise OCU's wrestlers who have earned berths into the NAIA Championships on March 4-6 at Abe Lemons Arena.

Johnson, a senior from Oologah, Okla., finished as runner-up at 285 pounds. Johnson fell 3-2 to Chas Maloch of McKendree (Ill.). Johnson picked up two falls en route to the finals.

Garner, a junior from Oklahoma City, took fourth place at 141 after falling 5-1 to Tim Mitchem of Cumberlands (Ky.). Garner pinned Xenepher Austin of Marion Military (Ala.) along the way.

Pontikes, a sophomore from Elgin, Okla., placed fourth at 174. Damion Stephenson of Cumberlands pinned Pontikes in the third-place bout. Pontikes pinned Steven Rink of Lindsey Wilson (Ky.) and edged Josh Ashbrook of Campbellsville (Ky.) 2-0.

Turner, a junior from Norman, Okla., fell 10-9 to Dustin Center of Cumberlands in the 157-pound final. Turner had two major-decision wins Saturday.

Ream, a freshman from Wentzville, Mo., pinned Ryan McKenzie of Cumberland in 2:59 in the 133-pound third-place match. Ream rolled through the consolation bracket with a major decision and three falls.

Meyer, a sophomore from Midwest City, Okla., fell 16-3 to Dyvon Passmore of Cumberlands in the third-place match at 165. Meyer picked up three falls, including a pin over Nick Sasfy of Cumberland in 3:39 to advance to the third-place bout.

Dicus, a redshirt freshman from Catoosa, Okla., finished fifth at 125, earning two pins along the way.

The Stars meet Hannibal-LaGrange (Mo.) in a 7 p.m. dual Thursday in Hannibal, Mo.
